How to make a giant Bible story poster

I spent ages making a giant Bible Story Poster for the wall of the Sunday School classroom. There’s no right way to do this, I was making my way through a cupboard full of card and paper that no-one had sorted through for several years, but there’s a multitude of ways to get pictures like this on your wall.

Pictures of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark, Abraham and Sarah, Abraham and Isaac on their way to sacrifice, Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his family in Egypt, 400 years later and Moses in the middle of a parted Red Sea.

Step 1: Choose your stories. I used the lessons we’d put together for the term to come.

  • Creation

  • The Fall

  • Noah’s Ark

  • Abraham and Sarah are promised a baby

  • Isaac is nearly sacrificed

  • Esau and Jacob fall out and reconcile

  • Joseph

  • Moses is called

  • Escape through the red sea

There wasn’t room to fit all of the details in, and this probably would have been easier if we hadn’t done such a broad overview (and I forgot to add the burning bush! - I’ll do it before the lesson). You could choose storiesfrom whatever book is relevant to what you’re teaching.

Step 2: Sketch out your ideas. They’re not the same as what ended up on the wall but I find it so much easier when I have something to aim for. You can down load all the sketches on power point and use them to create your own poster or as colouring sheets.

Step 3: Gather your materials. I chose to cut the shapes out of card or paper and then stick them to A3ish sized backing. I needed scissors, a ruler, a pecil and tracing paper as well as the coloured card, paper and tissue paper. You could do the same or colour or paint the sketches, in which case you might want to trace the pictures onto a thicker paper.
If you’re making it with the kids in your class you could use stickers for the stars and to add fish in the sea and flowers on the land.

Step 4: Create some characters. You can draw your own, print these out or copy the designs for your poster.

Step 5: Put it all together. I think this step is pretty self exlanatory although it may take a while. I worked left to right creating the background for each scene and then came back and added people and details. If you have everything prepared you could definitely do this with your class - how cool would that be to have their work up on the wall!

I hope you’re inspired to make your own giant Bible story poster, whether it’s of Genesis and Exodus, a different book, the whole Bible or the life of Jesus Christ.
